Planting and Maintenance

How often should raised beds and planters be watered?

That depends on weather conditions. During extremely hot, dry weather, you may have to water once or twice daily. During cooler, wetter weather, you may only need to water every other day or not at all.

Because plants in raised beds grow more rapidly, they consume water and nutrients faster. This rapid growth, combined with improved drainage and increased evaporation rate from the soil surface and sides of the beds, may cause raised beds to need more watering during dry weather than in-ground gardens.

Since crops can be harvested faster and yields are greater per square foot of gardening space, most gardeners find that some extra watering is well worth the effort.
To help reduce water requirements during hot, dry weather, try top dressing your beds with compost, worm castings, and light-colored mulch such as yellow straw or rice hulls.
