Yes. Larger, deep square planters like a 4'x4'x27” or a 6'x6'x33” planter with bottoms are well suited for growing dwarf fruit trees, large shrubs like blueberries or pomegranate, and for palm and citrus trees.
For even larger trees, plant outside in a bottomless planter of any height, but provide extra drainage and soil conditioning to the soil below the planter as deep and wide as possible. Make sure your planter is wide enough to let the horizontal surface roots spread out and anchor the tree.
Follow regular tree planting instructions as you would for normal ground planting inside the bed, providing adequate drainage and good trunk position. Plant on a mound, not in a hole. Remember to use mulch in the winter as tree roots in a raised bed are less protected from frost than roots in the ground.
Smaller planters also make beautiful containers for bonsai trees.
